Fungus Gnat Soil Drench: How to Kill Larvae in the Root Zone

If small black flies keep rising out of your pots every time you water, you have fungus gnats. The adults are a nuisance, but the real problem is below the surface. Fungus gnat larvae live in the top layer of moist growing media and feed on organic matter and fine roots. To break the cycle, you have to treat the root zone, not just the air above it. That is what a soil drench does.

How to know you have fungus gnats

  • Small, dark, long-legged flies hovering around the base of plants or walking on the soil
  • Adults caught on yellow sticky cards near the surface of the media
  • Tiny, translucent larvae with shiny black heads in the top inch or two of soil
  • Seedlings and young plants that stall, wilt or look weak even though they are watered

Gnats thrive in media that stays wet. Seedling trays, clone domes, overwatered houseplants and coco with frequent irrigation are all prime habitat.

The fungus gnat life cycle (and why traps alone fail)

Adults lay eggs in moist media. The eggs hatch into larvae, and the larvae feed and then pupate in the soil before emerging as adults. The whole cycle can repeat in a few weeks. Sticky cards catch adults, which is useful for monitoring, but they do not touch the eggs, larvae or pupae in the soil. You need something that reaches the root zone.

What a soil drench does

A soil drench is a solution poured through the growing media so it soaks the entire root zone, where larvae live and feed. Instead of chasing flying adults, you target the stage that is doing the damage.

Using Root Cleaner as a fungus gnat soil drench

Root Cleaner Soil Wash is made to clean the root zone. It kills fungus gnat adults and larvae, thrips and root aphids, and it helps control and prevent Pythium and Rhizoctonia. Use it in soil and coco, from seed to harvest. Root Cleaner is for soil and coco only. It is not for use in water-based systems.

Directions

  1. Mix: 1 oz (30 mL) Root Cleaner per gallon of water. Do not add nutrients.
  2. Drench: Water the media evenly until the whole root zone is soaked.
  3. Flush: 15-20 minutes after applying, flush the media with plain water.
  4. Reapply every 3-4 days until symptoms are eliminated.
  5. Reinoculate: Let the media dry for a day, then reinoculate.

Repeating every 3-4 days lines up with the gnat life cycle so you hit each new generation before it can reproduce.

Make the media less attractive to gnats

  • Let the top layer dry between waterings when your crop allows it. Gnats need moisture to lay eggs.
  • Do not leave standing water in saucers, trays or on floors.
  • Clean up debris such as fallen leaves and spilled media.
  • Store bagged media sealed so adults cannot lay eggs in it before you use it.
  • Keep yellow sticky cards at soil level to monitor adults before and after treatment.

Checklist for houseplants and grow rooms

  • Confirm gnats: check sticky cards and look for larvae in the top inch of media
  • Drench with Root Cleaner at 1 oz (30 mL) per gallon
  • Flush with plain water 15-20 minutes after applying
  • Adjust watering and remove standing water
  • Reapply every 3-4 days until symptoms are eliminated
  • Let the media dry a day, then reinoculate
  • Keep monitoring with sticky cards for 2-3 weeks

Fungus gnats and root health

Fungus gnat larvae can damage fine roots, and wounded roots are more open to root problems. Root Cleaner also helps control and prevent Pythium and Rhizoctonia, so drenching serves two purposes: removing gnats and cleaning the root zone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best soil drench for fungus gnats?

One that reaches the larvae in the root zone and is repeated to cover the life cycle. Root Cleaner at 1 oz (30 mL) per gallon, flushed with plain water 15-20 minutes after applying and reapplied every 3-4 days until symptoms are eliminated, does that.

Can I use Root Cleaner in coco?

Yes. Root Cleaner is for soil and coco only.

Can I use it on seedlings or late in the grow?

Yes. Root Cleaner can be used from seed to harvest.

Why do I still see adults after the first drench?

Adults that were already flying can live for a while, and eggs laid before treatment will still hatch. That is why you reapply every 3-4 days until symptoms are eliminated. Keep your sticky cards up to track progress.

Does Root Cleaner also help with thrips and root aphids?

Yes. It kills thrips and root aphids in the root zone as well as fungus gnat adults and larvae.
